Sugar Loaf Redoubt

SUGARLOAF REDOUBT

Built in 1776-77, Sugar Loaf or South Redoubt on Sugar Loaf Hill served as a link between the twin forts on the Popolopen and Fort Constitution and gave depth to the defenses of the Continental Village, the supply depot near Peekskill.  The Hill is now a part of New York State’s Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve and can be reached by the Sugar Loaf and Osborn Loop Trail.  No known description of the Sugarloaf Redoubt exists although it is referred to as part of Fortress West Point in General Washington’s primary source documents. Recent visits to the site have encouraged archaeological investigations and technology scans.
